Healthy
Tip Corner by:
Dr.
Michael Barbara
Medical
Director of Westview Healthplex Sports club and
Indiana Diet and
Nutrition Center and
HMR program
The
holidays can be stressful, with so much delicious
food beng offered and social pressures
to overeat. It can be easy to put
on weight over the holidays, but it does not
have to be as bad as you fear. Weight
gained during the holidays often comes from eating
foods that are high in sugar and fat. The
good news is that you can still enjoy those
special occasions as long as you use a bit of
restraint and keep yourself from indulging too
much.
8
Tips for Eating a Healthy Diet During the Holidays
1.
Take the edge off your hunger before you
go. Eating a snack or light meal, especially
one high in protein, like cottage cheese, nuts, or
chicken will help you eat less later.
2.
Fiber is your friend. Choose appetizers that will
help you meet the recommended guideline of 5 to 10
servings of vegetables and fruits a day.
These items will help you feel full so
you will displace several unwanted
calories.
3.
Small is good. Take smaller servings of
dishes that appeal to you. This is especially
important at a buffet, where you may want to try
everything. Choose the items you want to try
the most , and eat just 1 bite. After 3 bites of
any one item you are not tasting that item any
more, you are just eating it to eat
it.
4.
Take your time to enjoy the taste. Eat
slowly, savoring each bite.
5.
Do not eat fast food. Fast food is high in
fat.
6.
Take a low calorie dish to the holiday
party. The host will appreciate this and you
can eat this safely.
7.
Avoid alcoholic drinks. Drink non caloric
drinks.
8.
Get some physical activity daily.
Be
realistic in your weight loss goal during the
Holidays. As these can be challenging
times. If you find you eat more than you
planned, re-focus and get back on your
plan and continue on. If you maintain or
lose weight over the Holidays are you
VICTORIOUS!!!!!!!
The
Indiana Diet & Nutrition Center is
having an Orientation at the Healthplex on
Tuesday, January 11th at 6 p.m. Listen to a
former HMR patient talk about her weight
loss, her progress, and how she is able to
maintain her weight loss.
New
HMR classes will start the following Monday
January 17, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. For questions
regarding the HMR nutrition program, please
contact Lisa Patterson at 317-374-0875.

Message
from the Executive Director
December
is such a wonderful and busy month for so many
of us. There is plenty of excitement and
anticipation in the air with the fast
approaching holidays. With the weather
turning colder, holiday parties to attend, and
perhaps shopping still to do, it is very easy
to cut back or just stop your exercise
routine. Westview Healthplex Sports Club
has many programs and activities to help prevent
that from happening. One such example is
our annual fitness program, Holiday
Holdout. The goal of this program is to
help you keep you on track over the
holidays. This program benefits not only
you but also helps support the Marines Toys for
Tots program. To register, please stop by
the service desk.
Another
incentive program that I hope many of you have
started is fitRewards. The fitRewards
program is designed to encourage your
participation in club activities. Participating
members will receive points which can
be redeemed for club services or
merchandise. The best part is that there is no
cost to join. If you are not already a
member of fitRewards, just go to our website www.westviewhealthplex.org and
click on fitRewards to get started.
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank all
our members for their participation in our
programs and to express my sincere gratitude
that you have chosen Westview Healthplex Sports
Club to be your fitness club. I wish you
and your family much joy and happiness this
holiday season.
Happy
Holidays!

Director

,
Diabetes
and YOU
by:
Sandy Barnard, RN BSN CDE, Clinical Health
Educator
Diabetes
is a chronic, always with you, disease. It
can create havoc at the most unexpected times
and complications can sneak into your
life. The secret to living with any
disease, especially diabetes, is
understanding what to expect and how to be
proactive in controlling it, not allowing it to
control you. That said, what is diabetes
mellitus? Characterized by hyperglycemia
(hyper=high, glycemia=sugar in the blood),
diabetes has its roots in the ability of the
beta cells in the pancreas to make
insulin. How body parts utilize insulin
chemically determines whether sugar can become
energy.
Simply,
insulin is a key that opens up the doors on body
cells and allows sugars to enter the cell,
especially the liver, muscle and fat
cells. The sugars are broken down for
energy and muscles move. When blood glucose
levels drop, the liver converts stored sugar and
releases it into the blood stream. Insulin
stores sugars as fat for future use.
Insulin
is necessary for brain function since its
deficiency has been linked to Alzheimer's
disease. The proteins of insulin are
produced in the brain tissues and are part of
the normal functioning of the brain. It is
well known that insulin relaxes the blood
vessels and blood flow is improved.
Wherever the blood goes, so goes the potential
for problems.
So
what does all this mean? The body is a
well-oiled machine and it must be
maintained to the best of our
ability. Movement and muscles work the
machine. Move and the machine works to
prevent excess storage (weight). Feed the
machine first-rate fuel and the machine responds
appropriately by staying in good working
order.
The
job of any one who may be at risk for Diabetes
mellitus or has been diagnosed with Diabetes
mellitus is to LEARN Diabetes
Self-management Training (DSMT). DSMT is
the best approach to keeping the body's machine
in the best working order. Using the
techniques of DSMT, people with Diabetes are
able to live with a chronic disease and not be
consumed by it. The Westview Healthplex
and Westview
Hospital
have several programs to teach
self-management.
